Medical Student
University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine
Katelyn Day, MS is a rising third-year medical student at the University of Alabama Heersink School of Medicine with a strong interest in OB/GYN, particularly Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. Growing up in Alabama and working as a CMA for over four years before medical school, she developed a passion for providing comprehensive care to women across their lifespan. This experience piqued her interest in sexual and reproductive healthcare, menstrual cycle irregularities, and benign gynecologic conditions, while also drawing her to the field’s breadth, which integrates preventive care, surgery, and patient counseling—enabling her to provide continuity of care and foster lifelong relationships with her patients.
Her experiences also exposed her to the significant barriers patients—especially pediatric and adolescent populations—face in accessing specialized gynecologic care in Alabama. Through research and clinical mentorship with Dr. Jennifer Silk and Dr. Janeen Arbuckle, Katelyn has gained valuable insight into the profound impact PAG providers have on young patients—from guiding them through life-changing diagnoses such as POI and MRKH to providing compassionate counseling on contraceptive options. She aspires to pursue an OB/GYN residency followed by a fellowship in PAG, equipping her with the surgical and medical expertise required to one day provide comprehensive gynecologic care, and advocate to expand access to comprehensive gynecologic care for underserved youth in Alabama.
Beyond academics, Katelyn helps lead her medical school’s student-run free clinic, where she helps coordinate care for uninsured patients. In her free time, she enjoys diagnosing her friends’ sick houseplants with various maladies. These activities enrich her perspective and approach to healthcare and humanism in medicine.
Katelyn is honored to present at the NASPAG 39th Annual Research Meeting and looks forward to growing in her medical career and engaging with others passionate about advancing research and gynecologic care to improve the reproductive health of youth.
